Charles Boustany and H2B visas

Dr. Boustany advocates labor relief for Louisana:

Local economies across the United States are facing an immediate labor crisis. Seasonal jobs that have been filled for years by temporary H-2B workers are vacant. Sugar cane is not being processed, rice crops can’t be sorted or bagged, and crawfish and crabs are being turned away by processors who simply don’t have the workers to clean and pick the fishermen’s catch.

The H-2B visa program provides the small and seasonal businesses that drive many of our nation’s regional economies with legal, seasonal workers. The FY 2008 cap of 66,000 H-2B workers was met this year on January 2. In past years, Congress acted responsibly and allowed certain returning workers to be exempt from the H-2B cap in order to help meet the needs of the many seasonal businesses that rely on these workers. Unfortunately, Congress allowed the returning worker provision to expire last year, and thousands of small businesses nationwide face critical job shortages.

The bipartisan returning worker provision is now being held as a political hostage. While American business owners suffer, legislation to fill this need sits idle. In response to the lack of action, I introduced H.Res.1025 to call up, for immediate consideration, Congressman Bart Stupak’s H.R.1843, the Save Our Small and Seasonal Businesses Act. This bipartisan measure reauthorizes the returning worker program, supplying small businesses with their essential workforce. It is my sincere hope that with my colleagues’ help we can find a quick resolution to the crisis occurring in local communities around our nation.

If you have any questions, please visit my website or feel free to contact my Washington, D.C. office at (202) 225-2031. This is an important small business and economic issue, and I look forward to working towards a solution.

Me:  The 7th district is a small world, and I know some of the people he’s talking about.  I talked with my Uncle who is a big proponent of the George Bush/John McCain immigration policy.  Just get some foolproof ID cards for the H2B holders and the labor shortage is solved, right?  Sounds good but living in Houston opens your eyes to the reality of open borders and the often adverse consequences of such policy over the long run.  Flaunting of the law doesn’t stop with crossing the border.

U.S. builds border barrier on wrong side

Part of a vehicle barrier along the U.S.-Mexico border was erected in the wrong country and soon will be removed and rebuilt on American soil, federal officials say.
“We respect our international boundary, and we want to be good neighbors,” U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman Michael Friel told The Associated Press on Monday. “…We want to move quickly to ensure that we place the vehicle barrier where it should be, which is north of the border.”

This guy is perhaps the dumbest person that I have ever heard. Yesterday, Hannity body slammed this idiot and shows Voinovich’s lack of knowledge and understanding of important issues in front of millions of listeners, including me. (audio of the interview on the link)

Voinovich self-destructs on Hannity
Senator hangs up on host over ‘amnesty’ grilling
WASHINGTON – Sen. George Voinovich, R-Ohio, misunderstood the results of a vote on an amendment to the “comprehensive immigration reform” bill being debated in the upper house today.
He also is apparently unfamiliar with efforts to re-impose the Fairness Doctrine on broadcasters operating on the public airwaves.
But it was nationally syndicated radio talk-show host Sean Hannity’s persistent grilling about the senator’s intentions on key cloture votes leading to a showdown on what is characterized as an “amnesty” bill that caused Voinovich to melt down before millions of listeners today.
The normally low-profile Republican hung up on the No. 2 talk host in the country.

Senate Showdown on Amnesty Set for Tuesday

The one thing the politicians, the pundits and the press can agree on when it comes to the historic immigration bill now before the Senate is that it’s going to be a close call.
A make-it-or-break-it roll call vote on whether to cut short debate on S. 1639, the corrected and updated version of S. 1348, and to allow only amendments deemed appropriate by the bill’s backers to be discussed is scheduled for Tuesday.

This should make things interesting with regard to the Democrat vote.

Unions Differ on Immigration Legislation

WASHINGTON (AP) - The revival of the Senate’s immigration legislation also resurrected a rare split inside organized labor.

The AFL-CIO formally came out against the bill Wednesday, reflecting the distaste among manufacturing unions and others whose members have been displaced by overseas competition and would have to compete with an influx of cheaper workers who don’t have labor rights.
